Lundy is only six years old when she realizes that her entire life is going to be planned for her. “She had been able to find a doorway and disappear into an adventure, instead of living in a world that told her, day after day after grinding, demoralizing day, that adventures were only for boys that girls had better things to worry about, like making sure those same boys had a safe harbor to come home to.” And, friends, this might be my favorite book in the entire series so far. ![]() And this is her story, about her time in her world, the goblin market. The fifth season series order5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Keith Stanfield’s range as an actor, from a homeless youth in Short Term Twelve to an eccentric, nonsensical friend in the TV show Atlanta, is evidence of his ability to inhabit all sorts of personalities. A seemingly kind man, driven to terrible things. Jija haunted me throughout Jemisin’s novel. She can see the whites of his eyes, and then a silvery-gray disc of color that she can barely distinguish from the white, even up close.” - The Fifth Season But what strikes Damaya most are the child-buyer’s eyes. Everything about the stranger seems lean and attenuated. But where Father’s big shoulders join a big chest and a big belly, this man sort of tapers. And he’s big - taller, with broader shoulders, than Father. He has long flat hair, which together with the skin might mark him as an Arctic, though the color of it - a deep heavy black, like the soil near an old blow - doesn’t fit. ![]() “His skin is almost white, he’s so paper-pale he must smoke and curl up in strong sunlight. Alabaster is, in my opinion, the most complex and interesting character in the novel, and a master artist like Cheadle would have no trouble capturing his nuance. Especially the aspect of height, as Cheadle is only 5′ 8″. When I reread this description of Alabaster, Don Cheadle popped into my head immediately. ![]() Icebreaker by A.L. Mickey has a story in his head about his life that’s absolutely real for him, but also maybe doesn’t encompass the whole story of his life, and this book really digs into how we might see ourselves and our reality in a certain way, but that narrow vision is like a box that we could just open, but we’ve been in the box for so long that we stopped thinking about all the things outside the box, so we think it’s impossible to get out. Plot: Mickey’s difficulty acknowledging his mental health struggles makes all of the burdens of his own and others’ expectations for him much, much heavier.įirst off, Mickey and Jaysen are both in their first year of college, but they’re seventeen, not yet eligible for the NHL draft, and the themes and characterizations of the book are more Young Adult than New Adult. Quite a few correspondences can be discerned between certain descriptions in the Comedy and particular images within this baptistery-indeed, too many to be mere coincidence. There are many indications that Dante too was dazzled by the sight. The ceiling inside the baptistery is covered with mosaic images that still dazzle visitors today. The Florence Baptistery (illustrated above), which Dante fondly referred to in his Comedy as his "bel (beautiful) San Giovanni," is one such example, which the poet would have known well, even from the days of his youth. Incredible works of art and architecture filled the city well before Dante's birth in late medieval times. Florence was full of artistic marvels well before the Renaissance. ![]() The blank slate by steven pinker5/9/2023 ![]() Much of the book is dedicated to examining fears of the social and political consequences of his view of human nature: the ghost in the machine (each of us has a soul that makes choices free from biology).the noble savage (people are born good and corrupted by society)- romanticism.the blank slate (the mind has no innate traits)- empiricism.Pinker argues that modern science has challenged three "linked dogmas" that constitute the dominant view of human nature in intellectual life: ![]() The book was nominated for the 2003 Aventis Prizes and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
